Inspired by her native and adopted countries and cultures, Kay creates striking surface patterns inspired by her paintings and collages, English country gardens, Scandinavian folk art and design, and the beauty of the natural world.  

Her fine art practice also influences her surface pattern design process: several of her designs are made from her abstract paintings and collages, creating colourful and playful patterns.
